For smooth functioning of any kind of machine, whether it’s for industrial use or in the form of cars and trucks, it’s very important to know which engine oil lubricant suits the machine. A mismatch not only hampers the efficiency of the machine but also may damage the machine altogether.

Here are some things you must keep in mind while choosing the automotive oil treatment:

1. Viscosity

It’s imperative that you use a lubricant that matches the needs of your machine’s engine. If you just check the manual provided with the machine, then you can easily know which viscosity oil lubricant to choose. For machines, especially vehicles, the oil with low viscosity spectrum and a high viscosity index is mostly preferred. Almost all vehicles run on multi-viscosity oil but in case of say industrial machines, it’s highly advisable to use single-grade lubricant oil.

2. Temperature of the place

Climatic conditions of a place have a profound influence on the type of engine oil lubricant to be used. For cars and other vehicles, in a cooler place, you must choose an oil lubricant having viscosity ratings like say 5W-30 or 0W-30 (the number preceding W rates the oil’s flow at 0 degrees Fahrenheit). This is because in cooler temperatures engine oil lubricants tend to thicken quickly. The number succeeding W indicates the rate at which the oil thins out at a higher temperature. A 10W-30 oil will thin out faster than a 10W-40 oil.

3. Age of the machine

When you are using a machine for many years using say single weight oil, it’s not advisable to suddenly change to multi-weight oil. Prolonged use of machines can wear out its engine parts. So a multi-weight oil may not be thick enough to lubricate the worn out engine parts. It’s better to use heavier single-weight oil so that the gaps between engine parts are easily filled. For example, say an older vehicle should use a 40-weight oil instead of a 30-weight oil.

4. Additives

For places where the temperature fluctuates to wider degrees, lubricant oils having additives are utilized for engines. Additives help in keeping the viscosity static in places with a wider range of temperatures. For multi-viscosity type machines like cars, the additives help in faster lubrication of all the engine parts.

5. Quality certification

It is mandatory for any oil lubricant to meet the current engine protection ratings and fuel economy requirements. You must choose a lubricant that complies with all international standards (ACEA, API, ILSAC, and JASO) and meets the requirements given by the manufacturer.
The best thing one can do while choosing the right kind of engine oil lubricant is to strictly follow the guidelines in the manufacturer’s manual. Without a proper understanding of the importance of viscosity, oil additives, and classification ratings, it becomes difficult to choose the right kind of oil lubricant.
